Harambe Market OOTD: Unconventional Disney Style How-To
When it comes to fashion and style, I like to take inspiration from everything around me; sights, smells, greenery, people, culture. Fashion in essence is derived from all those things. It's an expression after all! So when I was thinking of outfits I could wear to Animal Kingdom, I wanted to switch things up from the usual, predictable Disney Style. This made a lot of sense for me because when I think of AK, this park itself is a little unconventional compared to the others. It truly feels as though you are fully and completely immersed into a world of nature and wild life. Harambe Market is an untamed, yet distinctly beautiful facet of AK bursting with color and texture. I wanted my outfit to directly reflect that!
The idea behind this outfit was to go for casual explorer-- and by explorer I mean exploring the streets of Harambe Market while sipping Starbucks and looking for cool walls and details that Harambe never seems to be lacking in.
The first thing I new I wanted to do when putting this outfit together was to ditch the ears. I think it's a very common misconception that one must wear ears while in the park to really drive your Disney Style home. I wanted to show a different way to achieve a solid Disney Day Outfit without the ears. So you will see I added just the right touches to other aspects of my outfit to show some Disney flair. Instead of ears, I opted for a straw hat with a simple black band from Target. These types of hats can be found everywhere during the spring and summer months, so check out all your local clothing retailers! The base of my outfit consists of this fun pom pom dress from Forever 21 (similar here.) The second I saw this dress when browsing online, I knew I wanted to wear it to AK for a day. It was light, flowy, and the colorful pom poms were so eye-catching! (I also think this dress would be awesome for a lot of other Disney Style outfits as well and I'm all about being able to repurpose clothing for different occasions and events.) It perfectly captures the care-free, colorful aspects of Harambe Market and it made me so happy to wear it! I truly felt like a local instead of a visitor. ;) To carry all my Market finds, I wore my Danielle Nicole Tinker Bell Crossbody. Her pom pom bun mirrored the pom pom detailing in the rest of my outfit and served as my Disney focal piece since I wasn't wearing ears.
To tie in the magic of Disney, I included several accessory pieces that gave nods to classic Disney. Layering neckalces is super in right now, so I added a Disney twist by wearing two dainty gold necklaces. The star and moon necklace was a Target clearance find and the simple castle necklace that so many of you have asked about is from the Disney Parks, but can also be purchased on the Shop Parks app (available for download on most mobile devices)! My fun sunnies that are needed for any day at the parks are the Invader's from Quay Australia and are some of my favorite to wear for their fun shape.
Side note: Doesn't it make you smile to see all those cutie pom poms?!
These Pom Pom Gladiator Sandals from Target went with this outfit PERFECTLY. Not only were they super colorful and fun, but they were also fairly comfortable! I walked around in these babies all day and my feet didn't seem to be overly sore from wearing them. What I love about Harambe is how lived in and worn it seems. Everything seems to be built by the people of Harambe and something about these shoes made me think that a villager could've crafted them to sell in the market. These shoes looked like they were made to be worn here.
For more subtle Disney nods, I dawned my usual arm candy consisting of all my favorite Alex and Ani, but more specifically my Hakuna Matata bangle. It's Lion King and Animal Kingdom! It's a no brainer!! It was just the AK touch my wrist needed. I also loved pairing my Lillian and Co Dreamers bangle and stretchy mixed metal Mickey head bracelet Abby got me. It added so much texture and was so eclectic when all paired together.
I mentioned earlier that Harambe is bursting with color, texture, and details, so I can't talk about this outfit without mentioning some of the walls and details I took direct inspiration from. HM is such an uplifting and inspirational piece of AK. The walls are covered in hand painted murals and phrases that will never fail to bring a smile to your face and some warmth to your heart. Next time you're at AK exploring, keep an eye out for the Fichwa Fellow mural and the Children of the World wall! They make for the perfect Insta photos! (As demonstrated above :))
There are so many other details to see that I couldn't fit on here so I encourage you to find all the others as well! You will have a wild time hunting for them all!
I firmly believe that accessories are powerful tools when it comes to making a outfit stand out and be something totally different. With just the right pieces you can turn an otherwise non-Disney related outfit and make it a total home run Disney Style OOTD. I definitely plan on doing more outfits like this moving forward and hope you all will branch out as well and try something new! Until next time--KWAHERI!! (goodbye in Swahili)
